Trends in Ed: 02.09.2011 – Why the Web Is Useless in Developing Countries – And How to Fix It

| February 9, 2011

Internet and social media is undeniably one of the strongest communication tools linking the globe. A recent example can be seen through the Egyptian government’s efforts to cut off internet and other forms of social media to control the on going protest organized by the web. I want to share this article.

The article notes a foundation which has the goal to “envision a world where all people are empowered by the Web. Everyone — regardless of language, ability, location, gender, age or income — will be able to communicate and collaborate, create valued content, and access the information that they need to improve their lives and communities.”

The World Wide Web Foundation has projects in various countries that target a variety of demographics. One of those projects is to develop voice browsers that would allow people without smartphones to take advantage of a connected web.

What do you think of the idea?
